Gentle Children's Dentistry in Ho Chi Minh City โ English-Speaking, No Fear
Trusted by expat families, dental tourists, and local parents across HCMC. Dr. Cuong delivers calm, unhurried dental care for children aged 1โ17 โ from a first check-up to crowns, sealants, and early orthodontics.
๐ When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
By age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth emerging โ whichever comes first. This is the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the WHO. Early visits allow Dr. Cuong to catch problems before they become painful and expensive, apply protective fluoride varnish, and guide parents on feeding, hygiene, and habits.
After the first visit, children should come every 6 months for routine check-ups. Consistent early dental care is the single most effective way to prevent childhood tooth decay โ the most common chronic disease in children worldwide.
As a leading choice for pediatric dentistry in Ho Chi Minh City, HCMC Dental in District 1 provides international-standard care for expats, dental tourists, and local families. Many parents delay their children's dental visits because they worry the child will be scared, or mistakenly believe baby teeth "don't matter." Both concerns are understandable, but both can lead to significant problems. We have built a practice specifically designed to make every child feel safe, respected, and even a little excited about dental visits.
Our approach: 100% English-speaking staff, a calm and unhurried environment, and a lead dentist (Dr. Cuong) who genuinely enjoys working with children. No surprise procedures. No rushing. No judgment for parents who come in late.
๐ฌ "The earlier a child starts visiting the dentist, the more comfortable they become. A 5-minute first visit at age 1 prevents a 90-minute procedure at age 5." โ Dr. Cuong, Lead Prosthodontist & General Dentist
Children's Dental Milestones by Age
Every stage of your child's development brings different dental needs. Here is what to expect โ and when to act โ at each key age:
First Tooth, First Visit
The first baby tooth typically appears between 6โ10 months. Book your child's first dental visit now. Dr. Cuong will examine the gums and emerging teeth, apply protective fluoride varnish, and advise on cleaning methods. This is also the time to stop bottle feeding at night, which is a leading cause of early childhood tooth decay.
Building the Foundation
All 20 baby teeth usually emerge by age 3. Continue 6-monthly check-ups. Fluoride varnish is applied at each visit. If thumb-sucking or pacifier use is prolonged beyond age 2, this is the time to address it โ before it affects jaw development. Introduce age-appropriate brushing using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
Sealants & Cavity Prevention
This is the highest-risk age for childhood cavities. Dental sealants can be applied to the grooves of primary molars to block decay. Diet counselling becomes critical โ frequent sugary snacks and juice are the main culprits. X-rays may be recommended to check for hidden decay between teeth. First dental fillings, if needed, are done with tooth-coloured resin for an invisible result.
Mixed Dentition โ The Critical Window
Baby teeth start falling out and permanent teeth emerge. The first permanent molars (the "6-year molars") need sealants immediately upon eruption. Space maintainers may be needed if a baby tooth is lost early. An orthodontic screening is recommended to assess crowding, overbite, or jaw development issues. Early interceptive treatment at this stage is far simpler than braces at age 14.
Orthodontics & Teen Dental Health
By age 12, most permanent teeth have erupted (except wisdom teeth). This is the primary window for Invisalign Teen or traditional braces if needed. Wisdom tooth monitoring begins from age 14. Teenagers are also higher risk for sports-related dental trauma โ a custom sports mouthguard is essential for contact sports. Continuing 6-monthly hygiene appointments prevents gum disease linked to hormonal changes during puberty.

Why Baby Teeth Matter More Than You Think
The most common reason parents delay treating a child's decayed baby tooth is the belief that "it will fall out anyway, so why bother?" This is one of the most costly dental misconceptions we encounter.
Baby teeth are not just placeholders. They serve five critical functions that directly affect your child's long-term health:
- Space holders: Each baby tooth reserves the exact position for the permanent tooth developing beneath it. Premature loss causes adjacent teeth to drift, creating crowding that requires years of orthodontic treatment.
- Speech development: Certain sounds (S, F, V, TH) require specific tooth positions. Missing front teeth during speech-critical ages (3โ7) can cause lasting pronunciation problems.
- Nutrition: Children with painful or missing teeth avoid hard foods like apples, vegetables, and meat โ switching to soft processed foods that worsen overall health.
- Self-esteem: Children with visibly decayed or missing teeth are statistically more likely to be bullied and develop self-confidence issues.
- Infection risk: An infected baby tooth can spread bacteria to the permanent tooth developing directly beneath it โ sometimes causing permanent damage before the adult tooth even erupts.
๐ก Treating a baby tooth cavity with a filling costs $25โ60 at HCMC Dental. Orthodontic treatment caused by early tooth loss costs $1,500โ4,000. The maths is clear.

Our Child-Friendly Approach: No Fear, No Tears
Dental anxiety in children is extremely common โ and almost entirely preventable with the right approach. At HCMC Dental, we use the internationally recognised Tell-Show-Do (TSD) protocol, which is the gold-standard technique in paediatric dentistry worldwide.
TELL โ We Explain
Dr. Cuong explains everything he is going to do in simple, age-appropriate language before doing anything. "I'm going to use this little mirror to count your teeth. It's just like the mirror at home, but it's tiny!" Children feel in control when they know what to expect.
SHOW โ We Demonstrate
The child can touch, see, or hold each instrument before it's used. The suction tube gets demonstrated on their hand first. The polishing paste is shown and smelled. The unfamiliar becomes familiar and non-threatening.
DO โ We Proceed
Only after the child is comfortable and consenting do we proceed with the procedure. We pause immediately if the child signals discomfort. There is no "almost done, just a bit more" โ we mean it when we say we stop on request.
No sedation required: The vast majority of children โ even those with significant dental anxiety โ respond well to the TSD approach and do not require sedation. Our calm, unhurried environment does the rest.
What to Expect: Your Child's First Visit Step by Step
Knowing exactly what will happen removes uncertainty for both parent and child. Here is precisely what occurs at HCMC Dental:
Before You Arrive โ WhatsApp Dr. Cuong
Message Dr. Cuong with your child's age and any specific concerns. We will send you preparation tips, confirm a convenient appointment time, and answer any questions you have before you even step inside. For anxious children, we can discuss strategies to frame the visit positively at home.
Arrival โ Calm, Not Clinical
The clinic is designed to feel welcoming, not intimidating. No overwhelming clinical smell. A friendly greeting by name. Parents remain with the child at all times. Children who have toys or comfort objects are encouraged to bring them.
Introduction โ Meeting Dr. Cuong (~5 minutes)
Dr. Cuong introduces himself to the child personally โ not just to the parent. He may chat about school, favourite foods, or hobbies to build rapport before touching any instruments. For very young children, we may simply count teeth with a finger and no instruments at all for the first visit.
Check-Up (~15โ20 minutes)
Using the Tell-Show-Do method, Dr. Cuong performs a gentle visual examination: counting and checking each tooth for decay, examining the gums and soft tissue, evaluating the bite and jaw alignment, and screening for early orthodontic needs. Digital X-rays are taken only if clinically indicated โ never routinely on a first visit.
Cleaning & Fluoride (if appropriate, ~15 minutes)
For cooperative children, we perform a gentle professional clean and apply fluoride varnish. For very young children or those who are nervous, this may be deferred to a second visit once trust is established โ and that is completely fine.
Parent Report โ Full Transparency
Dr. Cuong reviews all findings with you in plain language, shows you X-rays if taken, and explains any treatment needed โ its purpose, the procedure, the timeline, and the cost. No pressure. No upselling. You take home a written treatment plan if anything beyond preventive care is needed. You decide, at your own pace.
Next Appointment Scheduled
We book the next routine check-up before you leave โ 6 months from today. If treatment is needed, we discuss the best appointment sequence for your schedule, especially important if you are visiting Vietnam for a limited time.
What Parents Say About HCMC Dental
"We brought our two kids (ages 4 and 7) while we were in HCMC for our own implant work. Dr. Cuong was incredible with them โ patient, funny, and thorough. Our 4-year-old who had been terrified of dentists since a bad experience at home actually asked if she could come back. That says everything."
"My son needed a baby root canal and crown โ I was dreading it. Dr. Cuong kept everything completely calm. He explained every step to my son in a way he could understand, let him hold the mirror, and the whole thing was done with no tears at all. The cost was a fraction of what we would have paid in London."
"Living in District 1 as an expat family, finding a reliable English-speaking children's dentist was one of our top priorities. HCMC Dental has become our family dentist for everything โ all three kids and my husband and I. Honest, skilled, and always on time."
"Brought my 8-year-old for check-up and sealants. Dr. Cuong found two small cavities the previous dentist missed. He filled them the same day with white composite. The price was unbelievable โ less than one filling at home would cost. My son actually enjoys going to the dentist now."
Dr. Nguyen Van Cuong, DDS
"Every child deserves a dental visit that feels safe, calm, and โ ideally โ a little bit fun. When a child leaves our clinic without tears, or even with a smile, that is the best outcome I can imagine. Building a fear-free relationship with dental care in childhood is a gift that lasts a lifetime."
Children's Dental Care at Home: Age-by-Age Guide

Frequently Asked Questions โ Children's Dentistry in Vietnam
When should my child first see a dentist in Vietnam?
We recommend the first dental visit by age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits catch problems before they become painful, allow Dr. Cuong to apply protective fluoride varnish, and help establish a positive relationship with dental care from the very beginning.
How much does a child's dental check-up cost at HCMC Dental?
A pediatric dental check-up starts from $15 USD. Professional cleaning starts from $20 USD. Fluoride varnish treatment is from $12 USD. Dental sealants are from $18 USD per tooth. WhatsApp Dr. Cuong to book online and receive the 40% discount on applicable treatments.
My child is terrified of dentists. How do you handle dental anxiety?
We use the Tell-Show-Do method โ the gold standard in pediatric dentistry. We explain everything before we do it, show the child each instrument before it touches them, then proceed only when they are comfortable. Parents stay with the child throughout. We never rush. Most anxious children relax significantly after their first appointment with us.
Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
Yes โ absolutely, and we actively encourage it. Your presence is the most powerful reassurance tool for your child. You will hear all of Dr. Cuong's findings and recommendations directly, and can ask questions and make decisions in real time. We never ask parents to wait outside.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes. Our digital X-ray system uses up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The exposure is extremely small โ roughly equivalent to the natural background radiation on a 1-hour flight. We use a protective lead apron for every child and only take X-rays when clinically necessary, never as a routine procedure at every visit.
What is the difference between a pulpotomy and a pulpectomy?
Both are types of "baby root canal" treatments. A pulpotomy removes only the infected portion of the pulp (nerve tissue) in the crown of the tooth, leaving the root canals intact. It is used when decay has reached the nerve but the root is still healthy. A pulpectomy removes all pulp tissue including from the root canals, and is used for more advanced infections. Dr. Cuong will recommend the appropriate procedure after X-ray examination.
My child chipped a tooth โ what should I do right now?
For a chipped baby tooth: rinse the mouth gently with warm water, apply a cold pack to reduce swelling, and contact Dr. Cuong via WhatsApp with a photo. For a knocked-out permanent tooth: DO NOT scrub it. Keep it moist by placing it in milk (not water) or between the cheek and gum. Contact us immediately โ re-implantation is possible within 30โ60 minutes. For a knocked-out baby tooth: do not try to re-implant it. Contact us for assessment and space maintenance advice.
Do baby teeth really need to be treated if they will fall out?
Yes โ this is critically important. Baby teeth hold the space for permanent teeth. Early loss causes neighbouring teeth to drift, creating crowding that requires expensive orthodontic treatment later. Infected baby teeth can also damage the developing permanent tooth directly beneath. Treating a baby tooth cavity with a $25 filling today prevents a $2,000 orthodontic problem in 5 years.
At what age should my child have an orthodontic evaluation?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first screening by age 7. At this age, the mix of baby and permanent teeth allows Dr. Cuong to identify issues like crowding, crossbite, underbite, or excessive overbite early. Interceptive treatment between ages 7โ10 is often simpler and less expensive than waiting until all permanent teeth have erupted.
Do you offer sedation for children?
We do not currently offer general anaesthesia or nitrous oxide sedation. In the vast majority of cases, this is not needed โ our Tell-Show-Do approach and calm environment are highly effective at managing dental anxiety. For children who genuinely cannot cooperate with treatment, we can advise on suitable referral options for sedation dentistry.
How long does a pediatric dental appointment take?
A routine check-up and cleaning takes approximately 45โ60 minutes. This includes the examination, X-rays if needed, cleaning, fluoride application, and the parent report. Restorative appointments (fillings, crowns) take 60โ90 minutes depending on complexity. We never rush appointments โ your child's comfort and the thoroughness of care always come first.
My family is visiting Vietnam for 5 days. Can we fit in children's dental care?
Yes, easily. A comprehensive check-up, cleaning, fluoride, and sealants can all be done in a single appointment. If fillings or crowns are needed, this requires 2 appointments โ typically on consecutive days. WhatsApp Dr. Cuong before your arrival and we will plan a schedule that fits your itinerary perfectly. Many dental tourist families combine adult and children's appointments on the same day.
