What are dentures and do I need them?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. You may need them if you've lost multiple teeth due to decay, injury, or periodontal disease. Leaving gaps untreated can lead to jaw bone loss, facial collapse (sagging appearance), and shifting of your remaining teeth.

Dentures vs. Implants vs. Bridges:
  • Dentures: Removable, affordable, replaces multiple teeth or a full arch. Does not prevent jaw bone loss over time.
  • Bridge: Fixed, requires filing down adjacent healthy teeth, replaces 1-3 teeth.
  • Implants: Permanent, anchors into jawbone, prevents bone loss, higher upfront cost but highest long-term value.

The Hidden Danger: Facial Collapse

Many patients delay getting dentures or implants because they can "still chew on the other side." This is a critical mistake. When teeth are lost, the jawbone no longer receives chewing stimulation. Within the first year of tooth loss, you can lose up to 25% of your supporting jawbone width.

Over time, this severe bone resorption leads to Facial Collapse โ€” a condition where the lower third of the face shrinks, the chin rotates upward, and deep premature wrinkles form around the mouth. Once this bone is lost, fitting conventional dentures becomes extremely difficult and painful, often requiring bone grafting.

  • To slow bone loss: Get fitted for a proper, well-balanced denture immediately after extraction.
  • To stop bone loss: Only dental implants (or implant overdentures) stimulate the bone enough to prevent resorption permanently.

Do I have to wait without teeth? (Immediate Dentures)

No. We offer Immediate Dentures (Same-Day Dentures) for patients requiring full extractions. These are pre-fabricated before your extraction appointment and placed immediately after the teeth are removed. You will never leave our clinic without a smile. Because gums shrink rapidly during healing, immediate dentures require temporary relining after a few months to maintain their fit.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Most patients who come in for basic dentures leave with an implant overdenture plan. The upfront cost is higher โ€” but over 10 years you save thousands on adhesives, relines, and replacements." โ€” Dr. Cuong, DDS

Denture Care & Longevity Guide

How to care for your dentures to ensure they last for years:

  • Daily Cleaning: Remove and gently brush your dentures daily using a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser. Do not use regular toothpaste as it can scratch the acrylic.
  • Rest Your Gums: Should you sleep with dentures in? No. Gums need 8 hours of rest per night to prevent fungal infections and tissue irritation. Soak them in water or a mild soaking solution overnight.
  • Eating: In the first 2 weeks, avoid hard, sticky, or extremely hot foods as you learn to chew with your new prosthesis.
  • Relines: Gum tissue naturally shrinks over time. Plan to have a denture "reline" every 2 to 3 years to maintain a tight fit.

Expected Lifespan: Acrylic (5-7 yrs) ยท Valplast (5-10 yrs) ยท BPS (10-15 yrs) ยท Implant Overdenture (20+ yrs for implants, 10 yrs for prosthesis).

Note: If you grind your teeth at night (bruxism), Dr. Cuong may recommend a Night Guard to protect your investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do dentures cost in Vietnam at HCMC Dental?

Basic acrylic dentures start from $120 USD per arch. Premium options like Valplast flexible partials start at $250, and BPS premium full dentures start at $500. Exact pricing is confirmed after a clinical examination.

How many days do I need to stay in Ho Chi Minh City for dentures?

Most removable dentures can be completed in 3 to 5 days. We work with an in-house lab to expedite the process for dental tourists without sacrificing quality.

Is the denture fitting process painful?

Not at all. We use a 3D digital scanner to take impressions, which means no messy, gag-inducing putty. The process is completely painless and highly accurate.

What is the difference between Valplast and acrylic dentures?

Valplast is a flexible, thermoplastic nylon material that uses no metal clasps, making it more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing than traditional rigid acrylic. Acrylic is rigid and may use wire clasps.

Will my dentures look natural โ€” not "fake"?

Yes. Dr. Cuong meticulously selects the shade, shape, and size of the teeth to match your facial structure and age, ensuring a lifelike appearance. You will approve the look during the wax try-in phase before the final dentures are made.

How do I clean and maintain my new dentures?

Remove them daily, brush gently with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner, and soak them overnight to let your gums rest. Do not use regular toothpaste as it is too abrasive.

Can I eat normally with dentures? Which foods should I avoid?

Initially, stick to soft foods. Once you are accustomed to them, you can eat normally. However, you should generally avoid extremely hard, sticky, or very hot foods to prevent damage or dislodging.

What is an implant-supported overdenture and is it worth it?

An overdenture snaps onto 2-4 dental implants placed in your jaw. It provides superior stability (no slipping) and helps prevent bone loss. For many patients struggling with loose lower dentures, it is highly worth the investment.

Will Dr. Cuong personally fit my dentures or a junior dentist?

Dr. Cuong will personally review your case, plan the treatment, and conduct the fitting. We do not delegate international patient cases to junior dentists.

What if my dentures need adjustment after I fly home?

We perform meticulous adjustments before you leave. However, if minor adjustments are needed later, any local dentist can easily adjust acrylic or BPS dentures. Valplast adjustments require specific tools, which we will advise your local dentist on if necessary.

Do I need to use denture adhesive glue?

A properly fitted upper denture relies on natural suction to the palate and usually does not require adhesive. Lower dentures, however, sit on a much smaller ridge and move easily with your tongue. While BPS dentures provide the best natural fit, many patients still prefer a small amount of adhesive for the lower arch, or they upgrade to an Implant Overdenture which requires zero adhesive.

Will my speech be affected by new dentures?

It is normal to experience slight speech alterations (like lisping on "S" or "F" sounds) for the first few days while your tongue adjusts to the new appliance. We recommend practicing by reading aloud. Within 1-2 weeks, your speech will return to normal.
